American Son

Released as single June 28, 2024.

I am the prodigal son, who never has come home.

Receiver of all the gifts, condemned to be ever alone.

I stand in the spotlight, naked and undone.

But no one says a word to me, they all turn and run.

I am an American son, my sisters are American daughters.

Raised on too many guns and undrinkable water.

Our father’s father’s sins are written on God’s blotter.

I am an American son, I’m a witness to the slaughter.

My sisters taught themselves to sing, in the black of the darkest night.

They learned to spread their wings, and they learned to fight.

But their fight is never ending, it wears them to the bone.

How long can someone fight for a place that won’t let you come home.

We all want the same things, at least that’s what I’ve heard.

Whatever obstacles in our way, we will not be deterred.

You can have it fast or cheap, whichever way you prefer.

We’re the children of America, in America we are interred.

Two shadows dance upon my wall, it looks like they might fight.

Though they claim they’re on different sides, they come from the same cold light.

I sit and stare, silently, though I know I should choose.

But either way I choose to turn, it seems I always loose.

I am an American son, my sisters are American daughters.

Raised on too many guns and undrinkable water.

Our father’s father’s sins are written on God’s blotter.

I am an American son, I’m a witness to the slaughter.

I am an American son, sacrificed on the alter.

I am an American son, I wonder what that bought her.

I am an American son, now I have an American daughter.
