What? I’m not sure. These are uncertain times, as the saying goes. Also, apparently I’m pretty committed to bad headline puns. I’ll make it a regular thing.
So what do we do with this day?
I’ve been ruminating a lot lately on what it means to be ‘of’ a place. And as with all things, that tends to come out in songs. I think the song that dropped last week speaks to that pretty clearly- or at least I hope it does. As an American of a particular brand (white, male, straight), I’ve thought a lot about how do we reconcile our diverse and complex past. How do I own all of it? Even the parts that are deeply troubling- both of my own personal past, and the shared history we all live with. And what might I do with that going forward?
I have no answers, just songs. What do you think? Leave me a comment below or on the platform of your choice- what are you doing with this day?
While it would be great if you streamed American Son 700 or so times today (just to celebrate), I realize that’s probably not going to improve your backyard barbecue. Once or twice wouldn’t hurt though.
Nor is the song I wrote yesterday morning. But this is my website so I’m posting it anyway.
The fellas and I will be at Swing Station in Laporte in mid-July. It’s a Sunday set out on the patio- I promise you a rowdy good time.
However you are passing today, I hope it’s safe. Don’t blow your fingers off with any of those fireworks, and don’t scare the dog. Maybe give ’em a hot dog?
See ya out there. -JS
